Christmas spirit!

We just have to share with you the wonderful story of a little 10yr old boy who came into the shop today. He came in with a purpose, to get his Christmas presents for his mum, dad and three year old sister.

He saved up his birthday and chore money all year to buy these presents. So he carefully spent some time choosing the right things and was very enthusiastic about getting what he thought they would love. He decided on his sister first and paid for them and then went to look for a novel for his mum, asking for help. Realising he didn't have enough money in his pocket, he ran home in the rain to fetch more from his secret hiding place! On his return we helped him choose a novel which he paid for and next it was dad's book to choose. He loved the Steve Jobs book and knew it would be perfect for his dad, as 'he loves and buys all the Apple gadgets, except for the iPad as he can't afford it'. Looking at the price, he was just short £5 so off he whizzed home (still raining!) to fetch a bit more money.

In the end he bought:

Mum - The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery
Dad - Steve Jobs by Walter Issacson
Little sister - The Big Colouring Book by Usborne, finger puppets from Fiesta Crafts and some colouring pencils

We think he is the most wonderfully kind, thoughtful and generous little boy we've come across this year and we like to declare him the BOY OF THE YEAR 2011! In these madly busy times, he was the best example of Christmas spirit and we salute him!

The return of the Wombles!

The Wombles are close to our hearts here at The Golden Treasury (see the picture of Great Uncle Bulgaria with Sue Foster the owner). Being a stones throw from Wimbledon Common (their stomping ground), they are a wonderful childhood classic for us here. Who can forget their ingenious ways of using the rubbish they found and what an introduction to recycling?

We were so excited to see the beautiful reissues of the original Wombles books by Elizabeth Beresford last year! We now have the very soft Wombles plush in stock now, the DVD of the original TV series and also the new fully illustrated version of The Wombles. This first book introduces us to the the well loved characters such as Great Uncle Bulgaria and always hungry Orinoco! This special book comes complete with an audio CD with three specially selected Wombles stories ready by the one and only Bernard Cribbins, the original voice of the Wombles.

Introduce this to a new generation of children, we are sure they will love them as much as so many adults like us do now!

Advent calendars - snap them up now!

Penguins! Penguins! Penguins! From the success of the movie 'Happy Feet' to the scene stealing ones in 'Madagascar', penguins really are everywhere this year. This follows on from the hugely popular 365 Penguins by super duo Jean-Luc Fromental and Joelle Jolivet. This pop-up house features the house and family from the story and behind each window lies a little penguin surprise! Sure to delight fans of the black and white antarctic birds!

Who could resist The Gruffalo's Child at Christmas? The much loved Gruffalo is pictured here with the curious Gruffalo child, who loves to hear the story of the Big Bad Mouse! Try to spot the familiar characters from the original story as the Gruffalo's child from when he explores the woods on a wintery cold night.
Caroline Gardner have delivered some beautiful advent calendars yet again this year, with their usual quirky styles and vibrant colours, they are surely to put a smile on your face in the exciting run-up to Christmas!

Open this calendar up to discover a busy street scene with lots and lots to colour-in and look at. Little windows reveal a little picture to colour every day in the run-up to Christmas! Little characters are busy about there day in this fun scene. A lovely calendar for creative little ones, which also stands upright for display.
We also have the Jame Ellis designs in which are so wonderfully sweet and gentle, perfect for a special gift. A lovely nativity scene and also a Christmas tree design that is laden with decorations, which makes waiting for the 25th that much harder!

Christmas windows

We are all Christmasy here at The Golden Treasury! We thought that we would share our wonderful London themed Christmas windows with you. We took inspiration from the wonderful London 3D expaning skyline book from Walker Books and have created two windows of familiar sights around town.

We hope you like them and have been enjoying them as you pop in and walk past! We're very proud at The Golden Treasury to be a London independent bookshop, so glad to be in such an amazingly diverse city and we love our position in the heart of Southfields.

Thank you to Jo at Walker Books for providing the excellent London skyline cut-outs!

Halloween winners!

We had a record number of entries for our Halloween colouring copmpetition this year. Thank you to our excellent little artists, the entries were inventive, super creative and suitably spooky! Here are two photos to two of our winners Cathlyn who won a special mention prize for excellent creatvitiy and little Luke. Although he isn't smiling, he was actually really excited to receive a prize, just camera shy!
