My Story
My Story is a great series of key historical moments told through the eyes of a young person and in some cases as pictured, a pivotal figure. These are full of facts and would be a great supplement for children studying certain periods of history at school.
They are written in a diary format and are a favourite amongst children who prefer books that are not fantasy based. They are also a good way to encourage reluctant readers as the diary entries are less imposing than chapters and they are easy to get hooked on. These are also a good form of inspiration for children who would like to start their own diary.
Puzzles from imaginative French brand Djeco
We are big fans of the French brand Djeco at The Golden Treasury. We first started to stock Djeco last year to launch our Christmas range and it has gone from strength to strength.
We just want to show you some of the fab puzzles we have in stock. These are proving to be a hit for birthday gifts. All the artwork on Djeco products are carefully selected illustrators, who work with them to create some really imaginative children's products.
Long car journey with children? Part two.
Now a few suggestions for the older children. Some classics and some modern classics. If you haven't heard the fabulous Harry Potter CDs with Stephen Fry, you'll be in for a treat as they are hugely entertaining and in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows you'll be hooked into Harry's ultimate confrontation with Voldemort!
Jacqueline Wilson's My Secret Diary is hilarious as much as it is tragic. These are her secret diaries from her teenage years during the 50' and 60's, the beehive and boyfriend tears. It's a teenagers life, most importantly it made Jacqueline who she is today.
'Skulduggery Pleasant serves up a thoroughly satisfying blend of humour, magic and adventure. Once you've met Stephanie and Skulduggery, you'll be clamouring for a sequel.' Rick Riordan
Long car journey with children?
We suggest audio books for long car journeys, as everyone can enjoy them and they make a car ride seem so much shorter as you get wrapped up in the story!
Here are some suggestions for the younger ones. Tales of dragon adventure, nanny mischief and Clarice's mad life. We can order audio books just like we order our books, it just takes a few days.

The Night Iceberg - Helen Stephens
We have been very lucky to have award winning author and illustrator Helen Stephens visit our shop for a fun storytime last year and we are all very excited to see her brilliant new book The Night Iceberg. It touches on a subject that we all face with little ones at some point, the idea of sharing.
Tofta finds it difficult that she has to now share things with her little baby brother, but by chance one night she sees a beautiful iceberg drift by her window and decides that she wants that all for herself. She didn't anticipate 500 penguins turning up for some fun and games, but she learns to enjoy all the fun.
This book is so, so magical! It is filled with page after page of such thoughtful illustration and a wonderful lyrical story. This was a top choice among our avid audience during storytime in the shop this last week. We spent the rest of the storytime talking about the funny tummy sliding thing penguins do, what items we have shared with another person recently and would we pack 1 or 2 tins of sardines?
This story gave us much to discuss and it was such a pleasure to read. This is a book for keeps! £6.99 available now in the shop.
If you enjoy this book, you will definitely enjoy Helen's award winning book Fleabag. Shortlisted for the Blue Peter Children's Book Award and Winner of the Children's Book Award.

Most orders arrive within a few days, so please do ask if you need any help with ordering.
So, are you looking for something to read over summer? One Day by David Nicholls is flying off our shelves at the moment and it has been passed around the staff here and eveyone is raving about it!
'I can imagine you at forty,' she said, a hint of malice in her voice. 'I can picture it right now.' He smiled without opening his eyes. 'Go on then.' 15th July 1988.
Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows? Twenty years, two people, ONE DAY.

Independent Booksellers Week - Local History Evening
We had a week full of events during the national celebration of Independent Booksellers Week and we were really lucky to be able to have two local historians hold a fascinating talk here in the shop. There were some really interesting facts told on the night, for example does anyone know which wife of a famous U.S. president went to school in Southfields? Thank you to Neil and Peter for an entertaining evening.
Neil Robson author of Roomy Villas, showed an interesting selection of photos of the local Southfields area and was a mine of local information for our eager audience. His book focuses on the story of the Southfields Grid and it's surrounding area.
Famous and Infamous Londoners is a compilation of thoroughly researched true stories of Londoners through the ages, well known and little known alike - their lives, loves, pastimes and crimes. Peter de Loriol has compiled a great book of their stories, that weave a tapestry of London through the ages.
Both books are available in the shop. Roomy Villas £6.99, Famous and Infamous Londoners £14.99
Judi Abbot - The Biggest Kiss storytime
We were so happy to welcome illustrator Judi Abbot to the shop for a special storytime, where she read her new book The Biggest Kiss which she illustrated. We loved her entertaining storytelling and also Judi held a creative drawing session afterwards. There were lots of unusual combinations of which animal would give a kiss to another animal!
Judi was kind enough to judge The Biggest Kiss colouring competition and picked her favourites. Thank you to eveyone for coming along and also to Judi and Amy. If you 'd like to hear about our shop events, please email us to be added to our mailing list - southfields@thegoldentreasury.co.uk or visit our website.
